At the end of September the online poker players in France’s ring-fenced market will lose another internet poker room, following an announcement Friday by the respected Barriere group that it is to shut down its online poker operation.
The company cited weak economic conditions and a declining local poker market as the reasons for its decision to close shop.
The company’s website carried an advisory that declared:
“After 3 years of operation in the French poker market, BarrierePoker.fr announces the end of its commercial operations.”
Earlier this month the latest quarterly report from French regulator ARJEL confirmed fears that the market had undergone its sixth consecutive quarterly revenue drop (see previous report).
The French shutdown is not expected to negatively influence Barriere’s ambitions in a US legalised market, where it has a partnership with Caesars Interactive.
Rival Partouche Interactive closed its French operation earlier this year.
