The PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo Euro 50,000 buy-in Single-Day High Roller has delivered Spanish poker ace Adrian Mateos’s third largest pay-day, the victory boosting the Spaniard’s bank balance by Euro 908,000 this weekend.
The event generated a prize pool well over the guarantee at Euro 3.10 million from a total of 64 entries, 12 of them re-ups. Among the many top players spotted at the tables were Daniel Negreanu, Isaac Haxton, John Juanda, David Peters and Charlie Carrel, none of whom reached the final table.
Big names that did make the final eight included Daniel Dvoress, Erik Seidel, Fedor Holz, Nick Petrangelo, Steve O’Dwyer, Ramin Hajiyev, Mike Watson and Sergio Aido…an indication of the formidable quality of the field in general.
In all, the event took 14 hours of almost non-stop action to conclude, with the final table forming just after midnight when Mustapha Kanit was eliminated at tenth.
At the three handed stage Mateos saw off Erik Seidel to enter the heads up against Canada’s Daniel Dvoress with a 5 to 1 chip advantage that proved too tough for the Canadian to overcome; around 2.30 am local time Dvoress was sent home with a second placing prize of Euro 652,000, leaving the honours and the main prize in its entirety to Mateos.
Although Euro 908,000 is clearly a great deal of money, it is not Mateos’s biggest career pay-out; the young Spaniard won the main event in the EPT Grand Final Monte Carlo two years ago, pocketing just over a million Euros, and in 2013 he scored a million Euros in the main event of the World Series of Poker Europe.
Starting in 2012, he has played in almost every major live poker competition there is, securing pay-days that run from a few thousand Euros to six-figure victories.
Other final table cashes included:
Erik Seidel Euro 423,800
Fedor Holz Euro 319,800
Nick Petrangelo Euro 248,400
Steve O’Dwyer Euro 192,400
Ramin Hajiyev Euro 152,140
Mike Watson Euro 118,000
Sergio Aido Euro 90,200
