Toronto poker fan Sam Greenwood (26) is undecided on whether he’s a professional player or not, but he surely plays like one, taking down event 22, a $1,000 buy-in NLHE contest Thursday to boost his career earnings past half a million dollars and claim Canada’s first win in the current WSOP series.
Greenwood survived a field of 1,914 other contestants to win his first WSOP bracelet and $318,977 – the lion’s share of the $1.72 million prize pool – after an entertaining heads up against 23-year-old Seattle pro Cole Jackson.
It was the fifteenth career cash in the World Series for Greenwood, who plays both online and in high stakes tournaments, although this is his biggest win to date.
Jackson appeared to be in a unassailable position at the start of the heads up, but after a bold fight-back Greenwood grabbed the lead and sent the American home with a second placing prize of $197,254.
Other cashes on the mainly US final table were:
Ken Weinstein $136,380
James Dorrance $98,360
John Myung $71,904
Sean Rice $53,256
Aaron Belardo $39,967
Rovert Hsu $30,385
Jay Dragland $23,387
