German poker ace Ole Schemion is off to a great start at the currently running PokerStars Championship Presented by Monte-Carlo Casino festival, taking down the Euro 10,300 Opening No-Limit Hold’em event for Euro 274,750 and his ninth spade trophy.
Monte Carlo must be one of Schemion’s favourite stamping grounds; it was here that he took home Euro 1.8 million in last year’s Euro 100,000 buy-in Super High Roller, and agreed a chop in the Euro 50,000 buy-in Super High Roller that earned him another Euro 857,241. And there have been other lucrative wins over the past several years here for him.
In his latest victory, the event attracted a star-studded 110 entries, generating a prize pool of Euro 1,067,000.
On the final day former World Series of Poker Main Event champion Ryan Reiss started out as the final table chip leader, but failed to maintain momentum and was eliminated at sixth.
He wasn’t the only star player to bust – Ireland’s Steve O’Dwyer started strong but was eliminated at fourth.
Schemion entered heads up with a chip advantage against Murad Akhundov from Azerbaijan, but the latter scored early with a big pot that put him right back in the game. Schemion responded with his own big pot and a double up, playing aggressively for the next hour to keep ahead before finally claiming the victory and sending Akhundov to the cashier for the second placing prize of Euro 188,860.
Other final table cashes included:
Koray Aldemir Euro 123,770
Steve O’Dwyer Euro 100,300
Luc Greenwood Euro 80,560
Ryan Riess Euro 62,950
Jonathan Bensadoun Euro 49,610
Gerald Karlic Euro 37,880
