Online and live tournament poker professionals not infrequently have a relaxed approach to large sums of money, perhaps occasioned by the at times surreal experience of watching hundreds of thousands of dollars go across the table on a hand of poker, but this week one pro player showed a remarkable laissez faire attitude by leaving $300,000 in a Las Vegas cab.
Fortunately for the player, who has not been named, he was soon reunited with his money, thanks to the integrity of cab driver Gerardo Gamboa, who found a brown paper bag containing the small fortune on the back seat and took the trouble to trace the owner and hand it back.
The publication CardPlayer reports that Gamboa at first thought a bag of candy had been left in his cab, but on closer inspection found to his surprise and consternation that it was full of cash. He therefore initiated efforts through his cab company and the local police to find the owner and return the money.
It is not known whether he was satisfactrorily rewarded, but such integrity, and the sum of cash involved, is certainly deserving of substantial recognition.
CardPlayer reports that this not the first such instance; in October last year, another Las Vegas cabbie returned a massive six-figure sum to a forgetful passenger.
