Monday evening at the Penn and Teller Theater at the Rio in Las Vegas was a buzzy, noisy affair as the railbirds gathered to support their favourites in the final table of the 2013 World Series of Poker.
Finalist Ryan Riess appeared to be especially well-supported, with a fair number of people sporting “Riess the Beast” T-shirts.
Previous champ Greg Merson triggered the big game with his shuffle up and deal call as 5 Americans, a Canadian, an Israeli, a Dutchman, and a Frenchman made the cards fly.
When we went to press three finalists were already out of the contest; Mark Newhouse was first to go, despatched by Ryan Riess for a ninth place finish worth $733,224.
Just two hands later he was followed by David Benefield, who collected a eigth place check for $944,650 following his elimination at the hands of Jay Farber.
Dutch professional Michiel Brummelhuis is also out, another Riess victim whose seventh place finish brought him $1,255,356.
At press time Ryan Reiss had the most chips on 68,100,000, hotly pursued by Jay Farber (67,575,000). Both were well ahead of nearest rival Sylvain Loosi on 20,475,000.
