A 25-year-old Uruguayan outsider, Alex Komaromi, took on a star-loaded final table and bested them all at the World Series of Poker Europe Thursday, earning Euro 65,740 and his first WSOP winner’s bracelet.
Komaromi, a former LAPT main event winner, was one of 113 entrants in the Euro 2,200 8-Game Mixed event, and emerged as chip leader when the star-studded final table was reached Thursday in Berlin.
Facing him were quality international players and WSOP bracelet winners Scott Clements, Noah Bronstein, Jonathan Duhamel, Shaun Deeb and Jens Lakemeier…and he bested them all to become the first player from Uruguay to claim a WSOP winner’s bracelet.
When Bronstein hit the rail at third for Euro 29,200 the heads up was set with Komaromi taking an almost 500,000 chip lead into the final phase of the gaming against two-WSOP-bracelet holder Scott Clements.
Although he gave it his all, Clements was unable to close the gap and his Uruguayan opponent took the victory, leaving Clements with the runner-up prize of $40,645.
This week’s success boosts Montevideo-based Komaromi’s live tournament career earnings to over $350,000.
Duhamel finished fourth for Euro 21,065, whilst Deeb collected the fifth placing pay-check for $15,235.
